Antarctica's Doomsday Galcier Melting

Image
According to experts, the supply of warm water to Antarctica's Thwaites Glacier, also known as the "doomsday glacier," is higher than previously thought, raising fears about faster melting and ice flow—posing a risk to global sea levels. Because of its location and form, Thwaites is especially vulnerable to warm and salty ocean currents. With the aid of an uncrewed submarine named "Ran" that made its way under the glacier front, researchers were able to take measurements beneath it for the first time. "Before the study, we had no idea how warm water could get to Thwaites and attack them. We discovered that there are distinct paths that water takes in and out of the ice shelf cavity, influenced by the geometry of the ocean floor, using sonars aboard the ship, nested with very high-resolution ocean mapping from Ran "University of Southern Florida's Alastair Graham said so. Although the amount of ice that melts as a result of the hot water is small
